Himanta Biswa Sarma In Trouble
In one of the most dramatic political press conferences of the year, senior Congress leader and AICC Media & Publicity Department Chairman Pawan Khera today unleashed a series of sensational allegations against Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma.
Speaking live from the AICC headquarters in New Delhi (on YouTube), Khera presented what he called “shocking papers” and “documentary evidence” that supporters abroad had sent.
He described the revelations as one of the biggest exposés in the political history of independent India against a sitting Chief Minister and his family.
The allegations center on three active foreign passports, two undisclosed properties in Dubai, and a secretive US-based company in Wyoming, allegedly controlled by the Sarma family, with financial transactions totaling hundreds of millions of US dollars.
Here is a complete, detailed breakdown based on Pawan Khera’s live briefing.
1. Three Active (“Living”) Foreign Passports
Khera displayed documents on screen and claimed that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma holds three valid, non-expired foreign passports:
- UAE Golden Card (issued in Abu Dhabi): March 14, 2022 – valid until March 13, 2027
- Antigua & Barbuda Passport: Issued August 26, 2021 – valid until August 25, 2031
- Arab Republic of Egypt Passport: Issued February 13, 2022 – valid until February 12, 2029
Khera repeatedly emphasized that two of these documents are from Muslim-majority countries (UAE and Egypt).
He questioned the irony, saying the Chief Minister, whose “entire politics is based on hatred against Muslims”, has a wife who holds passports from two Muslim nations plus Antigua & Barbuda.
He directly challenged Indian citizenship laws:
“According to Indian law, you cannot hold dual citizenship. How can an Indian national have three passports of three different countries? We want to know, does Riniki Bhuyan Sarma still hold an Indian passport? Is she a citizen of India also?”
2. Two Undisclosed Properties In Dubai
Khera then showed what he claimed were official title deeds of two properties in Dubai’s Al Barsha South (Fourth) area, both registered under “M Group Riniki Bhuyan Sarma”:
- One property described as hotel rooms (Plot No. 397, Municipality No. 6811269, Building No. 1, Floor 2).
- Another flat in the same locality.
He pointed out that these properties have not been mentioned in Himanta Biswa Sarma’s election affidavits.
“Why have you not shown the two Dubai properties in your affidavit and declaration?”
3. The Wyoming Company – Riniki Bhuyan Sarma Asset Collective LLC
The most explosive part of the briefing involved a company registered in the US state of Wyoming, Riniki Bhuyan Sarma Asset Collective LLC.
According to Khera:
- The company lists family members as partners: Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, “H Riniki” (allegedly referring to Himanta Biswa Sarma), and their son (Nandi).
- He displayed the Minutes of the Annual Meeting of Members, which allegedly contain resolutions for:
- Adopting a budget of US$ 346,789,013 (approximately ₹2,900 crore) for developing “Riniki Bhuyan Hotels” in the coming year.
- Distributing more than US$ 520 million (over ₹4,300 crore) among the three family members.
- Authorizing the company to accumulate and retain another US$ 566,789,000 (approximately ₹4,700 crore).
Khera explained why Wyoming was chosen: it has no state income tax or franchise tax, offers strong privacy protections, and is popular among non-residents for asset protection.
He asked:
“Where did this money come from? How did you bring 52,000 crore to America? Why were these Dubai properties not declared in the affidavit?”
Direct Questions To Union Home Minister Amit Shah
Khera framed Himanta Biswa Sarma as the “adopted son” of Amit Shah, claiming the Home Minister treats him with almost the same affection as his own son, Jay Shah.
He demanded:
“Did the country’s Home Minister know that his adopted daughter-in-law holds three passports? Will Amit Shah set up an SIT to investigate this matter?”
Khera also compared the alleged non-disclosure to the actions of fugitives like Dawood Ibrahim, Nirav Modi, Lalit Modi, and Mehul Choksi, and referred to Himanta Sarma as “Bunti Babli”, a nickname the CM has previously objected to.
Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Immediate And Strong Rebuttal
Within hours of the Congress briefing, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma and his wife Riniki Bhuyan Sarma issued a sharp response.
They have described the entire set of allegations as “malicious, fabricated, and politically motivated lies.”
The couple has announced they will file both criminal and civil defamation suits against Pawan Khera within the next 48 hours.
Verification Status – What We Know So Far
As of April 5, 2026 (evening), no independent verification of the documents has been carried out by:
- The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA)
- Any major national investigative media house
- The Election Commission of India
- Any court or official investigative agency
The claims rest entirely on the material presented by the Congress party during today’s live briefing.
No neutral fact-check confirming or debunking the authenticity of passports, title deeds, or Wyoming company records has yet been published by mainstream national media.
(Note: The “UAE Golden Card” is often a long-term residency permit known as the Golden Visa rather than full citizenship.)
Political Context And Timing
Himanta Biswa Sarma has built his political brand on strong positions on illegal immigration from Bangladesh, the implementation of the Assam Accord, the National Register of Citizens (NRC), and the protection of indigenous Assamese identity.
The Congress party has consistently criticized these positions as “anti-Muslim”.
The allegations have surfaced suddenly today amid a bitter ongoing political rivalry in the run-up to the Assam assembly elections.
Congress leaders have vowed to take the matter to the Election Commission of India and the “people’s court”.
What Happens Next?
If the documents are proven genuine and represent full foreign citizenship or major undeclared foreign assets, this could raise serious legal questions under:
- Indian Citizenship Act, 1955 (Section 9)
- Election affidavit disclosure rules
- Foreign asset declaration norms
If proven false, the Congress party could face severe backlash for what Himanta Sarma’s camp calls a “desperate political smear campaign”.
This is a fast-moving and highly charged story.
We will continue to track any official statements, court proceedings, or independent investigations.
What is your take? Is this a genuine bombshell exposé or classic election-time political warfare?
