Mumbai: In a major crackdown, the Anti Narcotics Cell of the Mumbai police has successfully dismantled an interstate drug smuggling ring.

Acting on a tip-off, the police apprehended two individuals and confiscated a significant quantity of cough syrup valued at approximately Rs. 35 lakh.

Arrest and Charges

According to officials, the two suspects, aged 38 and 44, were arrested on Saturday under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.

Their detention marks a significant breakthrough in the ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking in the region.

Cough Syrup Abuse

The seized cough syrup contained codeine phosphate, an ingredient known to have a narcotic effect on the central nervous system.

The operation commenced when the police intercepted the suspects at Sion on Wednesday.

Upon their apprehension, the authorities discovered four boxes of codeine-based cough syrup valued at Rs. 2.85 lakh.

Following the trail, the police discovered that one of the arrested individuals, a resident of Pali in Rajasthan, had acquired an illicit supply of 40 cartons of cough syrup using his canceled medical license.

He had stored the contraband in a warehouse in Bhiwandi, a neighboring district of Thane.

Seizure at Bhiwandi

In a subsequent raid at the Bhiwandi warehouse, the police seized the remaining cough syrup with an estimated value of Rs. 31.65 lakh.

This seizure, combined with the earlier confiscation, brought the total value of the intercepted cough syrup to Rs. 34.5 lakh.
